Future-proof through open source and open standards

The open-source framework Plone has been continuously developed, improved, and adapted to current requirements by an international developer community for many years. We have been working with Plone since 2003 – and are convinced that this platform will continue to provide a reliable basis for modern digital solutions in the future.

Plone is flexibly extensible and grows with your requirements. New features, modules, designs, or integrations can be added at any time without fundamentally changing the existing system. The architecture of Plone is based on a stable core to which additional functions can be docked like building blocks. This keeps the platform powerful, modern, and maintainable in the long term.

Is independence maintained in case of conflict?

Yes – unconditionally.

A key advantage of Plone lies in its consistent open-source architecture and the use of open standards. This allows any qualified agency or your own IT department to take over, operate, and further develop the system.

You remain in control of your digital platform at all times and are not dependent on a single provider – not even on us. Our job is to support you in the long term and create added value, not to bind you technically.

We have been working with Plone since 2003. For small campaign sites, it is oversized, and then we like to work with Odoo or Webflow — for portals with many editors, multiple languages, and long-term use, we know nothing better.

Advantages

• No agency dependency: Plone is fully open source and is supported by the Plone Foundation and an international community. Any agency with Python expertise can take over the system — even against us. You are not bound to anyone.
• Security: Plone is among the CMS with the fewest security-related vulnerabilities and is used worldwide in government and higher education.
• Accessibility: WCAG-compliant output out of the box — relevant for all clients subject to the Web Accessibility Act.
• Multilingualism: Mature translation management. We operate the CIPRA Alpine Portal in five languages.
• Rights, roles, and workflows: Editorial processes with approval levels and protected areas are part of the system, not an add-on.
• Data sovereignty: Self-hostable in Austria or the EU, without dependence on a cloud provider.
• Investment security: Clear update paths over the years. A Plone website does not need to be rebuilt every few years, but grows with add-ons and version jumps.

Interfaces, third-party systems, and protected areas

Can Plone be connected to our existing systems?

Yes. Plone comes with a complete REST API, as well as webhooks and ready-made integration modules. We have connected CRM and marketing automation systems (HubSpot, Mailchimp, CleverReach, Brevo), ERP and inventory management systems, newsletter and event tools, as well as Matomo for privacy-compliant analysis.

A limitation we like to address early: The effort almost always depends on the third-party system, not on Plone. Well-documented APIs are a matter of days, historically grown in-house developments without an interface can be a separate sub-project. We assess this in advance, rather than discovering it during the project.

What about data protection with US providers?

HubSpot and Mailchimp process data in the USA. For companies, this is usually manageable with a data processing agreement and clear consent — for public authorities, the situation is often tighter. We know both paths and also advise you on EU-hosted alternatives. For analysis, we standardly rely on Matomo, operated on our own infrastructure.

Customer portal and protected areas

Role-based access control is at the core of Plone, not an add-on module. Customer portals with individual views, document repositories with versioning, intranets and extranets, editorial workflows with approval levels, and protected data rooms for sensitive content are possible.

Plone is flexible when it comes to registration: own user management, connection to existing Active Directory or LDAP, single sign-on via OAuth2 or SAML. This allows your employees to access with their existing credentials without an additional password.
